Competition Workshop
Overview:
The COCOON Youth Science and Technology Innovation Practice Competition (Competition Workshop) will be held in August. Backed by the COCOON Conference, this competition is geared towards full-time undergraduate and high school students, aiming to provide a boost for young scholars embarking on their scientific research journey. The competition steering committee comprises esteemed experts, including academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, and IEEE Fellows, such as Academician Jiang Changjun from Tongji University, Professor Chen Guihai and Professor Gao Xiaofeng from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Researcher Sun Xiaoming from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Shi Yongtang from Nankai University, and Associate Professor Dai Haipeng from Nanjing University.
The competition unfolds in two phases: the preliminary round and the final round. In the preliminary round, participating teams are required to submit their research findings in the form of a paper. The final round, on the other hand, selects outstanding teams through presentations and rewards them accordingly. The competition primarily focuses on mathematical modeling, computation, and optimization problems, which not only hone the scientific research mindset of young individuals but also cultivate their ability to solve practical problems. This competition offers a valuable opportunity for adolescents to showcase their talents, interact with peers, and receive guidance from experts. We firmly believe that through this competition, we can ignite the interest of the younger generation in theoretical computer science and nurture future pillars of the computational science field.
Participant Grade Range:
The competition primarily targets undergraduate and high school students currently enrolled in domestic and international institutions. Cross-grade but not cross-level team formation is allowed.
The COCOON Competition Workshop primarily caters to undergraduate and high school students as its primary participants. The COCOON Competition Workshop offers separate competitions for high school students (grades 10 through 12) and undergraduate students (freshman through senior year in college). This approach ensures that each age group can compete on a level playing field, tailored to their respective levels of academic maturity, knowledge, and experience. By doing so, the competition aims to foster a more inclusive and equitable environment where students can showcase their talents and skills within their own age cohort.
Competition Structure:
-
Preliminary Round: Conducted through a correspondence system, students form teams of three to tackle a real-world application problem. Teams submit their solutions in the form of a research paper. The submission portal will be announced later.
-
Final Round: A round of presentations will be held, from which outstanding teams will be selected and awarded.
-
Awards: Winning teams will be invited to participate in the COCOON Workshop activities, attend the conference dinner, and receive award certificates signed by the competition steering committee. Additionally, winning papers will be published in the COCOON Competition Workshop proceedings (published by Springer, indexed by EI).
